Current research

My current research focuses on the intersection between forests, soils, and climate to understand how trees are physiologically responding to climate change and how different tree species will adapt to future climates. I use a variety of stable isotope approaches to identify the seasonal water sources that trees have access to, and how trees regulate water loss and carbon assimilation in response to increased temperatures and water deficits. Overall, my research program aims to better understand and predict the vulnerability of different forest communities to stress and mortality under the warmer, drier conditions that arise with climate change, and how exposure to these conditions varies across different forested landscapes as a function of topography and underlying hydrologic processes.

Previous research

I have been fortunate to work with a lot of different scientists on a variety of projects, including:
The physiological ecology of Californian oak woodlands in response to extreme drought
The vulnerability to xylem embolism in Californian oaks
The role of environmental variability in determining plant drought responses
How subsurface hydrologic processes mediate tree vulnerability to extreme climatic drought
Best practices for reporting climate data in ecology
How phylogenetic structure and host abundance drive disease pressure in plant communities
